Jack Stephens BMus(Sud) is the Director of Music at St Paul’s College. Jack is responsible for facilitating and developing the musical life of the College, this include directing the Choir of St Paul’s College, composed of 32 students that sing Evensong each week, as well as regular performance within professional engagements. Jack also works with students in the intercollegiate Palladian competition alongside regular performances and musical events throughout the year in the College.

Jack has worked extensively both within Australia and overseas as a soloist and ensemble singer, enjoying his role as the Artistic Director of Tarsus Chamber Collective, the residential professional chamber ensemble based at St Paul’s College.

Jack was formerly the Principal Lay Clerk at St Andrew’s Cathedral Choir, as an Associate Artist with the Song Company, and performs regularly with St Mary’s Cathedral Choir and Cantillation. Alongside his responsibilities at St Paul’s, Jack is currently studying a Doctorate at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, within which he is examining Regietheatre and its application to the staging of Bach’s Passions and cantatas.

You can find Jack performing regularly at the Canberra International Music Festival, Albury Chamber Music Festival and the Four Winds Festival Bermagui. Jack is also a core member of the Canberra-based consort Luminescence Chamber Singers with Roland Peelman.

During his time at St Paul’s College, Jack has produced and conducted a number of operas, including Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (featuring Sally-Anne Russell and Andrew Goodwin) and Purcell’s King Arthur (with Peter Cousens). Jack enjoys regular performances with pianist Ronan Apcar, touring Australia with programmes of German lied and English art song.

In addition to his work as a singer, Jack also plays the French Horn, named in 2014 as the Suffolk UK Wind Champion. In 2018, Jack was a concerto soloist alongside Robert Johnson (Principal Horn of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra) in Schumann’s Konzertstück (Concerto for Four Horns) and was the winner of the Ryde Multi-Instrumentalist Eisteddfod. 2017 saw Jack featured on NBC and Channel 9’s True Story with Hamish and Andy involving tales of musical tragedy and triumph, with comedians Kitty Flanagan and Ed Kavalee recreating an event in his life titled ‘Jack’s French Horn’, which has been broadcast around the world.
